Japanese aren’t a very picky people. They will eat just about anything with only a few exceptions. They like to eat raw horse called Bashimi, but they do not eat dogs in Japan. If they went to China or Korea and given the chance to eat an “eating dog”, they’re is a good chance they’d do it just to see if they liked it, but then again, it depends on how much they like dogs.
Japanese people like to eat slimy stuff. If it looks like it wriggles and jiggles when you shake it, they will probably eat it. For example they love nattou (firmented beans in a snotty like sauce), tofu, tororo (finely grated yam mixed with raw quail egg and rice served with cooked beef tongue), sashimi (big slices of raw meat or fish), sushi (mostly small cuts of raw meat served on slightly sweet rice).
Japanese people like to cook their own food at restaurants. They enjoy yakiniku which is korean barbecue. Basically you sit at a table with a large grill or hotplate and you are given raw meat on a plate and you have to cook it yourself. They also like okonomiyaki. It is very similary to yakiniku but the main ingredients or grated yams, a kind of pancake mix, egg, caggage, and whatever meat you choose, and a sauce. They give you all the ingredients and you’re supposed to make a big pancake meat filled pancake at your table on the gridle. Japanese people also like ishiyaki-bibinba (also know as heaven in a bowl) which is another korean food that you have to do a little work on first before you eat it. Here’s the premise, you get a big stone bowl that is red hot with almost all your food in it. You have to add an egg and the hot sauce to the vegetables, rice, and beef. Then you have to stir it into your bowl to cook everything because the stone bowl is hot remember. Japanese people like nabe too. Nabe is a big pot that is brought to your table and it is filled with vegetables, meat, and water. Your job is to stir the food around until it is cooked thoroughly and take turns serving the food to each other in small bowls. Japanese people also like sukiyaki and shabu-shabu, but I forget which is which, so come to Japan and findout for yourself. Almost all the stuff you have to cook yourself at the table is really delicious in my opinion.
This is kind of a funny post, but you know, Japanese people vary in their tastes quite a bit. Some hate natto and won’t touch the stuff, and others can’t get enough. It’s not that different than any country, really. Some are traditional and prefer Japanese preparations of food, others are adventurous. I know plenty of picky eaters- in Japan and elsewhere.
Maybe in Japan there is a closer relationship to the sea and things that come out of the sea than some places.
